The KindiCare Excellence Awards

Recognising the top performing early childhood education and care centres in Australia.

The KindiCare Excellence Awards were established in 2021 to recognise and celebrate the outstanding early childhood education and care services delivered around Australia that support the early learning, growth and development of our children. Early childhood education and care is hugely important in supporting a better future for our children and all Australians, and as such, we recognise the amazing contribution that quality centres make to our children, families and society. This year, Guardian Childcare & Education Blackburn West has taken out the top KindiCare Excellence Award nationally from all the state and territory finalists, with a KindiCare Rating of just over 9.9. All 2023 Award winners are delivering outstanding early childhood education and care services, thanks to the hard work of childcare providers and their people; and the common theme amongst this year’s winners is a dedicated team on the ground, delivering a strong curriculum. The 2023 KindiCare Excellence Awards recognise just over 2,500 early learning services nationally, that have achieved a KindiCare Rating of 9.0 or above, from a total of over 17,300 services. Approximately 12% of services nationally have been recognised with an Excellent Award, with the top 3% of the nation’s best performing early learning services receiving the newly introduced Outstanding Award for achieving a KindiCare Rating of 9.5 or above. In recognition of achieving an Excellent KindiCare Rating in the 2023 KindiCare Excellence Awards, all centres and services that have achieved an Outstanding KindiCare Rating or Excellent KindiCare Rating have been sent a certificate to mark their contribution to early learning, and a badge to display at their centre. Every one of this year’s winners has an amazing story to tell, and we encourage you to read about each Award-winning centre below.

How the KindiCare Excellence Award winners and finalists are determined

With the first five years of a child’s life critical in their early development and future wellbeing, excellence in providing early childhood education and care is so important for our children’s development and growth, and those centres that truly excel in providing early learning services should be celebrated! The KindiCare Excellence Awards were created to recognise the top performing early learning services across the nation, and the dedicated directors, educators and staff that operate them. Rather than being judged by early childhood education and care industry peers, the KindiCare Excellence Awards are determined by KindiCare, using the KindiCare Rating. The KindiCare Rating provides a unique score for every early learning service, that is based on their current and historical assessment and ratings under the National Quality Framework, parent and community feedback and reviews, the stability and length of operation of the service, as well as other characteristics known about a service. The KindiCare Rating provides a comprehensive real-time picture of quality and value for money that’s easy for parents to understand. Over 500,000 data points from the KindiCare App and KindiCare Childcare Comparison Website are used by the KindiCare Rating algorithm to determine a rating for each early childhood education and care service registered in Australia. These data points include almost 250,000 parent reviews, over 25,000 current and historical ACECQA assessment and ratings under the National Quality Framework, as well as other information and data held by KindiCare regarding early learning services. In addition to the National Winner and eight State and Territory Winners, there were a total of 2,502 early childhood education and care services recognised in the 2023 KindiCare Excellence Awards as having achieved an Excellent KindiCare Rating of 9.0 or higher; including 514 who received the top rating category of Outstanding with a KindiCare Rating of 9.5 or higher. Each and every one of these centres and services receive a formal acknowledgement from KindiCare of their rating and rating category, which includes a decal to display at their centre to let families know that they are a top-rated centre. They also receive a certificate for the early learning service’s director, educators and staff. KindiCare’s Founder and CEO, Benjamin Balk says, “At KindiCare, we are strong advocates for the early learning sector and support both parents and childcare providers on their early learning journey. We cannot underestimate the importance of early childhood education and care to Australia, both in ensuring a better future for our children, and creating a stronger, smarter and more competitive economy on the global stage. “We are proud to recognise the top performing early learning providers and centres across Australia in this year’s KindiCare Excellence Awards; and give our thanks to the many talented and committed early childhood educators and staff who create amazing experiences for our children and give them the best possible start in life.” The following table shows the breakdown of KindiCare Ratings for early learning services nationally:

What is the KindiCare Rating

The KindiCare Rating is the only rating in the early childhood education and care sector to combine data about a centre, feedback and reviews from parents and families, and government assessment and ratings under the National Quality Framework, together in one simple and easy to understand indicator of a childcare service’s performance. The KindiCare Rating makes it easy for families, childcare providers, government and other industry stakeholders and participants to understand how individual early childhood education and care services compare nationally, as well as in their local markets, suburbs and regions.
KindiCare Ratings Explained
Outstanding

Early learning services that have a KindiCare Rating of Outstanding (9.5 and above) are in the top 3% of services nationally delivering an outstanding level of early childhood education and care. Just over 500 services are in this category in 2023 and they are the ones that truly excel in the quality of environment, culture, educators and curriculum. Outstanding centres have typically been operating for many years, have a stable, highly qualified and experienced workforce, and consistently receive outstanding positive feedback from parents and the community, as well as being consistent top performers under the National Quality Framework. All centres in this category are Exceeding the National Quality Standard.

Excellent

Early learning services that have a KindiCare Rating of Excellent (9.0 - 9.5) provide very high quality education and care to the communities they serve. These services ensure that they are reviewed under the National Quality Framework regularly and have consistent, highly rated feedback from parents who use their services. Only 11.5% of early learning services nationally achieve this KindiCare Rating category, and 95% of the centres in the Excellent category are Exceeding the National Quality Standard.

Very Good

Early learning services that have a KindiCare Rating of Very Good (8.5 – 9.0) typically exceed the average KindiCare Rating nationally. 97% of services in this category are Meeting or Exceeding the National Quality Standard, and they have very good feedback from parents in the communities they serve. Services in this category provide a better than average early education and care environment, and tend to be operated by experienced providers.

Good

Early learning services that have a KindiCare Rating of Good (7.5 – 8.5) are typically Meeting the National Quality Standard in all or most areas, but may also have limited feedback from the communities they serve or haven’t been assessed under the National Quality Framework within the last three years. 80% of the services in the Good category are Meeting or Exceeding the National Quality Standard.

Fair

Early learning services that have a KindiCare Rating of Fair (5.0 – 7.5) typically provide early learning services well below the national average. These services often have limited or poor reviews from families and/or have been typically assessed as Working Towards the National Quality Standard in some or all quality areas. These services can sometimes be new centres that have had their first review, and after being assessed, are identified as having several areas in which to improve. Only 65% of the services in this category are Meeting the National Quality Standard overall.

Poor

Early learning services that have a KindiCare Rating of Poor (5.0 and below) typically provide early learning services far below the national average of quality. These services often have limited or poor reviews from families and/or have been assessed as Working Towards or Significant Improvement Required under the National Quality Standard in some or all areas. These services can sometimes be new centres that have had their first review, and after being assessed, are identified as having several areas in which to improve. Only 65% of the services in this category are Meeting the National Quality Standard.

Not Rated

Early learning services that have a KindiCare Rating of Not Rated (NR) are early learning services that have been operating for less than three years since their provisional approval AND have yet to formally undertake their Rating and Assessment by the government regulator, ACECQA, under the National Quality Framework. For centres that are yet to be formally assessed under the National Quality Framework, parents should seek feedback from other parents currently using the service, research parent reviews about the service, and also check whether that brand is operating any other centres in Australia, using the Search by Brand feature on KindiCare. Doing this will give them a feel for if they are a large or small provider, and what quality ratings look like across the other services operated by that early learning brand.
